  river help needed
Posted by: LynnB - 01-04-2009, 11:59 PM - Forum: Tips and Tricks - Replies (11)

I guess this could have gone into scenery.
I've been thinking about putting in a 3" x 3foot river but I'm a bit leary about going at it and possibly just need some suggestions and maybe ...
So here's the issue , I have plywood top with seveal support beams underneath( not an issue to cut through) , I want a stone/ gravel river bottom rocks protruding, I want the river to have some depth , I need the banks to allow the fsm super saw mill to not be too high about banks as rail has to be able to be used. I know its not a real big deal to make a river bottom.I got the Frarey modeling water dvd for xmas and he shows how to do an awsome river but the river is a stand alone for scenery only and interferes with no rails or structures. What I'm thinking is either cut a long strip\hole into the plywood top and building up the base\river bottom or using 3/4 white foam board as the river banks and build up.

Here's some pics of the area , you can see the large foot print out of paper and the river will have to come off the two bridges and behind the sawmill will need to be a moving pool then to the river and perhaps finish the river going into the stone culvert into side of hill. I would like to have the river bottom a 1/2" lower than the sawmill pool like a small falls\rapids dropping into the river bottom , this adds to the problems I think . The brown paint is river size. Also you can see the switch which will hold a rail for the sawmill and if need be I can probably raise the rail a bit to fit better for the sawmill.

So any thoughts?

  My Missabe layout
Posted by: KevinKrey - 01-04-2009, 07:45 PM - Forum: HO Modeling - Replies (24)

I got into modeling quite a few years ago with a train set for Christmas. I would always take a family vacation to Duluth MN. every summer, where I first saw the DMIR on one of these trips and became very interested. I gave a few attempts at layouts, and ultimately built a 4x12 layout with a 4x3 leg on one side. It wasnt real prototypical of any rr. I no more than completed it and realized it wasnt what I wanted. I am now working on the scenery of my 9'x20' DMIR layout, which is still waiting on an ore dock extension. I need to dig up a few of the old pics, but here are a few, and Ill try to post more later of the progress. Actually I cant find the pics. Ill get some up tommorow. Sorry.

"Working on the Railroad", reruns back on
Posted by: ezdays - 01-04-2009, 07:02 PM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (13)

Yes, I noticed that the DIY show, "Working on the Railroad" is back. Just reruns, but for anyone that missed any episodes, I found them on the DIY channed at 3 AM Sunday morning. That's Arizona time, so that would be 5 AM on the east coast, 2 AM on the west coast. They started off with episode 5, I can't remember what 1-4 were about. I have some of the later ones on my DVR, so it will record all the ones that I don't have already. His other show on R/C models is also on in reruns, right before this one.

  What are your other hobbies?
Posted by: tomustang - 01-04-2009, 06:23 PM - Forum: Lower Berth - Replies (59)

Besides modeling HO Trains, I'm into cars. A lot more than my HO's. Power, handling, good looks as long as it hauls!

two of the biggest toys we got are the cobra and trans am:

We did eventually sell the trans am, and probably sell the cobra soon to buy a C5 Z06 then add a mild cam and corsa cat-back to it.

Another is tools, can't live without them. They are the basis of my surrounding, love to tinker with anything mechanical, especially large/heavy equipment.

So, what are your other hobbies?
