I originally posted this in the fallen flags thread, but it fits here now too:

I'm afraid that after looking through a few pages of the thread, I still don't understand what you are supposed to do?

First a picture can be followed with a like piece of equipment (steam locomotive/ steam locomotive of any type) ( cab unit/ cab unit of any type F/E/FA/PA/Shark etc). With the other diesels a like model locomotive should follow, and you should play off of the main subject.
You may also post a unit or rolling stock with the same reporting marks (UP locomotive/UP box car) or box car with any box car, etc).
You can also play off of the unit number (not including the reporting marks) ( a loco number 7135 with any equipment numbered 7135)
Models are acceptable, and encouraged.
As with all pictures posted on the Gauge, they must be your picture or you must have the rights to post it.

I think I'm catching the drift here. I guess we're supposed to take the subject, whatever it be, and then post up a picture that relates to something about that picture:

Ex/ A Southern Pacific caboose is posted up. That means somebody either has to post up something with the same road number, the same road name, or a caboose.

Am I right in that asumption?

I don't understand. Do you mean that the original photographer's name has to be on the picture if you didn't take it?
You should always give credit to the original photographer, and if you do not have their permission to post it then it is a copyright infringement. This does not apply to some photos that have entered into the public domain. (it is ok to post a link to another photo that has been posted elsewhere)
